    Thanks Greg. Love me some SRV and still have my Soul to Soul vinyl. A question: If all of these are dominant 7th chords why is it that the major 6th in the bass sounds so good? It seems that in blues that is always the case. I guess the major sixth is still a member of the scale?

    Another great video. For covering blues/blues rock, nobody online does it better. An idea for a similar video is comparing Albert King's original version of Born Under A Bad Sign (with Duck Dunn on bass) to the version Albert King and SRV do on "In Session" (1983). Gus Thornton also plays bass on this track. They are similar bass lines, but Gus plays it with a little more funk than the original. BTW, I love both versions.

    In the end I don't think Brian had a clear preference for the bass players in the Wrecking Crew (despite his quote to the contrary, note Brian hasn't been the most reliable narrator of his life since the early 80's). Of the electric players Ray Pohlman and Carol Kaye basically sounds the same because Brian Wilson as the composer of the bass line (and whole song) as well as arranger and producer had final say over everything. Even Brian playing bass on That's Not Me doesn't stand out in any way compared to the wrecking crew's bass playing on the this album despite that song being mostly Beach Boys (Dennis and Carl play on it too). As an aside, i've found that playing sponge muted flatwounds with a pick on my Fender Mustang Bass it sounds not far off the Dano sound which I think is due to it being a similar scale (The Dano tends to wobble a fair bit especially on anything played on the low E string). I have the Squier Bass VI and just find the Mustang easier to play. In terms of instrumentals Brian mostly recorded the album as one shots (IE they would do a take with the whole room

    • @GregsBassShed
      @GregsBassShed 7 дней назад

      Interesting, I really liked the Fender Mustang that I tried a while back and I'm looking to get either a Dano or Mustang. I love that pick Dano sound and good if the Mustang can get near to it. I think that Brian came to favour Carol Kaye later as he certainly said he favoured her in his interviews. But possibly at the time he just used whoever was free and Carol played 6-string guitar on some tracks so that may be a reason why he changed up who was playing electric bass . I guess this stuff is hard to remember all these years later!

    • @Blend42
      @Blend42 6 дней назад

      @@GregsBassShed I know Ray Pohlman became music director of Shindig! (where the Beach Boys played a number of times on TV), from September 64 to January 66 so Carol is prominent on their 1965 work. The instrumentals for the three 1965 begun Pet Sounds tracks (Sloop John B, You Still Believe in Me and title track Pet Sounds) all feature Carol (and Lyle Ritz on upright bass) . Excluding That's Not Me as it's mainly the Beach Boys, the other 9 tracks have a pretty even split of fender P bass with Ray playing 5 and Carol 4. Ray does play 6 string dano bass on Wouldn't It Be Nice for instance where Carol is playing P Bass (3 basses on that track!). Funny enough Carol is playing 12 string guitar on God Only Knows when Ray is on P Bass and Caroline No (where she overdubbed Dano to go with the upright in addition to her guitar). Brian ended up not using any of takes of Good Vibrations that feature Carol despite her being there for many of the sessions later in 66 (and her thinking she played on it). In the end it was Ray Pohlman's P Bass for the Verses and first Bridge, Bill Pitman (who mainly played guitar) doing the Dano VI for the first bridge, third bridge and Chorus fade, Arthur Wright for the P Bass in the 3rd bridge and chorus fade and Lyle Ritz on upright bass for the verses and second bridge and P Bass for the choruses. This is a extra long fan mix that uses a lot more of the sessions including parts cut where Carl Wilson, Carol Kaye and Bill Pittman play a variety of basses in addition to the players mentioned above for the song. ruclips.net/video/olZgT9I9-eA/видео.html I would love to have a Dano as the Fender VI is a bit of a different beast. RUclipsr Joshilyn Hoisington who makes great breakdowns of Beach Boys tracks did a little short documentary about the Beach Boys and the Danelectro VI here too that is worth checking out if you are interested: ruclips.net/video/AzJP0WoxvDI/видео.html

      @@Blend42 cheers. It’s all interesting stuff. Who truly knows what went on in those sessions! Fun to try and work it out though! The main problem I see, is that different players laid down tracks and they then didn’t know which ones were used in the final mixes. Obviously in most cases you can recognise who the player is, but not always. Ultimately , it’s about the end result in the end and Pet Sounds is a great and groundbreaking album!

      @@GregsBassShed We do know a fair bit about what went on. Pretty much the whole session tapes of most of their 60's work was leaked in the late 70's/ early 80's and massively bootlegged. So we have a ton of rehearsals/ takes, Brian giving instructions to the Wrecking Crew for instrumental sessions and to the Beach Boys for vocal sessions and making changes. We also have the contracts and know who got paid for each session (and therefore should have been in attendance). This channel used some of those recordings for mini documentaries about many Pet Sounds tracks. Here is one for Sloop John B ruclips.net/video/h9iu65sot1E/видео.htmlsi=L1hdIBO4khuuQg9G

    thanks Greg I was really complicating this Bass Line, you really helped me quit trying to BE Latino, just relax in the minor 7th box.

      It's easy to do this! Simplicity often wins with bass lines though 😀

    As a big fan of Southern Rock this tune was an awesome choice. You really captured the feel of the genre. Nicely done Greg. Many thanks for this tune and I hope you’ll do more Southern Rock tutorials.

      Definitely more Southern Rock coming on the channel. I'm always impressed by the high level of musicianship when I look at this genre. Great music!

    Great bass line. Other Southern Rock suggestions? Blackberry Smoke?

    I've heard of the band Blackfoot but never heard any of their material. It's a cracking bassline. Some parts of the line remind me of Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, especially with the 'double stops' and going from the root to the lower fifth ....Good stuff and thanks for introducing the music of Blackfoot 👍
